The Round House

Summary: Joe is a 13-year-old boy living on the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. One Sunday morning, his mother doesn’t return home from a random work errand. Confused, Joe and his father go out searching for her. They find her, shaken by an abusive situation, and without the words to iterate what happened.

Takeaways: The reader joins Joe as he discovers the intricacies of U.S. versus reservation law and fumbles through how to right this grave injustice. Louise Erdrich beautifully crafts an intense plot while also weaving in glimpses of indigenous culture and life as a marginalized community.
