The Great Alone

Summary: Thirteen-year-old Leni is sick of her father Ernt’s impulse decisions that uproot her family. This time, he’s convinced that moving off the grid to rural Alaska will fix all of their problems. Reluctantly, her and her mom agree, hoping this is finally the thing that brings Ernt out of his PTSD from his time in the Vietnam War. They couldn’t have been more unprepared.

Takeaways: This story highlights human resilience, nature’s beauty, and ultimate isolation. Told from the point of view of young Leni, we watch her adjust, change, and grow into a fierce woman who carries her trauma on her sleeve. Certainly a page-turner that will leave you with clenched fists, sighs of relief, or a little of both.
