Like a Mother: A Feminist Journey Through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy

Summary: When author Angela Garbes became pregnant, she turned where most expecting mothers do: Google and parenting books. To her dismay, claims such as “breast is best” were grounded in cultural judgment instead of scientific research. She wrote this book to fill in the gaps behind what is “best practice” and actually describe what (amazing but scary) body changes occur during pregnancy.

Takeaways: Whether it’s socially accepted or culturally shunned, pregnancy can be a taboo topic. We shy away from discussing things like postpartum depression, the full labor story which includes birthing the placenta, and new bodily surprises such as leaking breast milk. This author doesn’t shy away from any of it. She tactfully mixes her own pregnancy experiences with thorough research and expertise. As a reader, her explanations soothed me.
